Beat Combo is a noisy rock band from Nottingham, UK. Worshipping at the altar of 90s post- hardcore, they make the kind of racket that should appeal to fans of bands like Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Unwound, Shellac etc. Formed under the moniker Pre-Birds in 2016 as a three- piece, the band shared stages across the country with Drug Church, Meat Wave, Pile, Messthetics, Silent Front, USA Nails, Kagoule, Yards and more. They released an EP and a split 7” vinyl with Ballpeen via Sunderland-based DIY collective Serial Bowl Records.
The first EP is ‘Kind Regards’ and is also the first under the Beat Combo name. Four slices of noisy and chaotic rock, packed with moments of sonic assault and punctuated by the twisting, interweaving guitar style that the band have been honing for the past few years. Lyrically, the songs veer between the subjects of mental health, quasi-dictatorships, religious fallacies and good old-fashioned revenge tales. The first track Pyro is accompanied by a video created by the band and is a straight-up 2-minute rager and a suitably in-your-face introduction to the rest of the EP. Play it loud and expect the second EP to follow suit soon.
“Awkward jangular post punk via alt rock carry on that their previous incarnation twisted our melons with. The press bumph suggests it’s for fans of Fugazi, Shellac, Jesus Lizard and co and they are right. Two and a quarter minutes of insistent stabbing and jarring uncomfortable-ness and then we’re done.
